One of several steps toward admitting that hyperinflation had destroyed Zimbabwe’s economy was taken in 2008 when the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe began issuing extra-large denomination banknotes. The 2008 notes were the second in a series of three denominations of the nation’s currency, the midpoint, more or less, of a cataclysmic fall that saw the Zimbabwe dollar tumble in value from about 1½ U.S. dollars in 1980 to roughly nothing in less than thirty years.

By 2009, the Zimbabwean government had given up in the face of inflation that was running up to 98% per day, admitting its currency was worthless and relegating it to the history books along with Reich marks and Confederate dollars. But collectors have stepped in where bankers feared to tread, and Zimbabwe banknotes have become favorites as novelties and collectible items.
