This year’s theme for National Coin Week is "Discover the Past, Envision the Future."
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, and mankind’s first steps on the moon. This year’s annual celebration of numismatics, sponsored by the American Numismatic Association (ANA) focuses on discovery and invention throughout history, including commemorative coins and paper money, medals, innovations in the production of money, and more
96 Years of Celebration
In 1923 ANA Governor Julius Guttag proposed an event to promote coin collection and numismatics, the study of coins. Since then National Coin Week has evolved into a week-long event in the third week of each April.
This Year’s Events
The ANA will host a variety of activities both online and at its Money Museum in Colorado Springs. They include:
- ANA Members Coin Design Competition. Design a coin to celebrate an invention or discovery achieved in the next 50 years. The winning design will be released in 2069.
- The annual Club Trivia Challenge for member clubs.
- Daily Trivia Challenge. Answer questions on social media and money.org for a chance to win prizes (4/21-4/27).
Prizes for the design contest and Club Trivia Challenge include:
- Grand Prize: Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Five Ounce Proof Silver Dollar
- Second Prize: Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof Silver Dollar
- Third Prize: Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof Clad Half Dollar
The Great American Coin Hunt
To celebrate National Coin Week (April 21-27), more than 200 members of the group Coin Dealers Helping Coin Dealers will place thousands of old coins — from century-old Indian Head and early Lincoln cents to vintage silver dimes and quarters and older paper money — into circulation. While they won’t be dropping any million-dollar items, be sure to check your change. No telling what you might find.
