The U.S. Mint continued its release of 2017 collector coins with the March 2 launch of the American Gold Eagle Proof coins. Unlike the investor-grade bullion coins, these collector-quality coins have a frosted proof-quality finish and mirror-like fields.
Beautiful Design Combines Old and New
The coin’s face (obverse) carries the iconic Aguste Saint-Gaudens image of Liberty striding forward over a rocky outcropping with a torch of enlightenment in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The sun’s rays radiate behind her and the U.S. Capitol building lies in the distance on the lower left. The name Liberty is inscribed at the top, and 50 stars radiate around its circumference, representing the states in the Union. The coin’s date and the West Point mint mark (W) appear on the coin’s lower right along with Saint-Gaudens’ initials.
The reverse design, by contemporary sculptor Miley Busiek, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings. “United States of America” is inscribed above the eagle and the mottos “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust” appear below each of the male eagle’s wings. The bottom rim is inscribed with the coin’s gold contentits nominal face value. Busiek’s initials appear below the nest.
Coins Offered in Singles or 4- Coin Sets
American Gold Eagle coins are available in 1 oz., 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz. and 1/10 oz. sizes with nominal face values of $50, $25, $10 and $5, respectively. They are 22-carat (91.167% pure) gold alloyed with silver (3%) and copper. Their actual gold weight is stated in troy ounces. By law, the gold must come from U.S. sources.
The coins are available individually or in a 4-coin set containing one of each denomination packaged in a satin–lined presentation case accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the U.S. Mint.
They are available through the Mint’s online catalog, or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). The coins’ prices are based on the market value of gold at the time of order. There are no ordering limits since the mint produces the coins in anticipation of each year’s demands.
