Brief History of Zimbabwe Currency
In 1980, Zimbabwe was born out of the ruins of the former nation of Rhodesia. Almost immediately, the new government began issuing its own currency, the Zimbabwe dollar (Z$) to replace the Rhodesian dollar as the country’s official currency. The Z$ was introduced at an exchange rate of roughly 1:1 with the U.S. dollar. But a series of disastrous economic decisions by the new nation’s authoritarian government led to hyperinflation. By the beginning of 2009, the Zimbabwe dollar had set new records for worthlessness with over one billion Z$ to the U.S. dollar.
That April, the government demonetized its worthless currency, switching to the South African rand, U.S. dollar, euro, and several other stable currencies as legal tender in Zimbabwe.
But before abandoning its native currency, Zimbabwe printed mega-notes that, while worthless as money, have become some of the most collectable paper notes because of their astronomical denominations.
