The nation of Zimbabwe is a perfect example of what happens when government printing presses run without stopping. During the late 2000’s, Zimbabwe saw currency hyperinflation like the world has never seen before -- surpassing the post WWI Weimer Republic of Germany.
The following list shows the release dates and denominations of the inflated Zimbabwe dollar:
- $10 million, $50 million and $100 million (December 4th, 2008)
- $200 million and $500 million (December 12th, 2008)
- $1 billion, $5 billion and $10 billion notes (December 19th, 2008)
- $20 billion and $50 billion notes (January 12th, 2009)
- $10 trillion, $20 trillion, $50 trillion and $100 trillion (January 16th, 2009)
From December 4th, 2008 to January 16th, 2009 (a span of only four weeks), the government of Zimbabwe released 14 bank notes. The face value of each one grew greater and greater and the denominations were hard to comprehend.

The collectible Zimbabwe currency was officially abandoned in April of 2009. Today, the South African rand, U.S. dollar, Euro, Botswana pula, UK pound, Chinese renminbi, Australian dollar, Indian rupee and Japanese yen are all legally accepted currencies in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe dollar is still very popular with collectors and can be purchased here at Great American Coin Company.
