"A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money"(Everett Dirksen) —unless you’re in Zimbabwe.
That quote, famously attributed to the late Senator Everett Dirksen, may have had some meaning in the U.S. in the 1960s, but by 2008, millionaires were quite literally a dime a dozen in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe dollar had been so thoroughly destroyed by inflation that a dozen millions of their dollars were only worth about ten cents, or maybe less, in U.S. currency.
Hyperinflation of Zimbabwe Dollar and Banknotes
That hyperinflation led the Zimbabwe government to issue banknotes in enormous denominations in a futile attempt to keep the country’s currency alive. 5, 10, 20, and 50-billion-dollar Zimbabwe banknotes were printed just so its citizens could buy everyday necessities, presuming anyone would take the worthless currency in the first place.
Collector Curiosity Grows
But, just like Confederate dollars and Weimar Republic marks, failed currencies hold a certain fascination with collectors, and the Zimbabwe dollar is no exception. While the Zimbabwe dollar is worthless as money, its worth as a collectible curiosity has grown since it was removed from circulation in 2009.
